Description
Annual basil with small, clove-scented leaves. Useful in tomato, cheese, and vegetable dishes, salads, and pizzas. It prefers a dryish position and develops more flavor and scent when grown in poorish soils. Sow under glass in February or March, and outdoors in April or May. Sow thinly in a 9cm pot on a windowsill or trays in a greenhouse at around 10-15°C (50-60°F) using quality compost. Cover seeds with 6mm (1/4") sieved compost. Germination takes 14-21 days. Grow on in pots and use leaves when plants are approximately 15cm (6") tall. Sow every 3-4 weeks for succession, or grow on to plant or sow outside in containers/borders 23cm (9") apart.
